Baggage Collection for International Transfer Passengers

Most inter-terminal connections require arriving passengers to collect baggage after immigration, clear customs and exit security, then walk, use a Taxi, shuttle bus, or the AirTrain to get to the other terminal and then re-clear security. When booking connecting flights, international passengers should have a minimum of 3–5 hours to avoid missing connections

Dispatch Policy for JFK airport pickup

Dispatch Policy
In order to optimize dead time for the drivers and save wait time charges to our customers, vehicles are dispatched just in time, as soon as flight land or the flight is at the gate. We can customize these dispatch times as per kind of travel, such as, with luggage, with no luggage, customs or no customs or other customer preferences.
Your flight arrival may be delayed due to weather or some other reasons, so we do not dispatch a vehicle until your flight is about to land. Since our Dispatch system is linked to

FlightView, it is designed to dispatch the next available vehicle with optimized Dispatch policies for on-time arrival of the vehicle for your pickup and minimize dead time for drivers.

Based on our 37 years of industry experience, we have optimized our Dispatch Policy, as below, to save waiting time charges to the customers and dead time for the drivers. The Dispatch Delay Option gives you the control, if you wish, to delay or expedite the time of dispatch.

During inclement weather when there are erratic flight delays, flights may land but sit on the tarmac for some extended period of time and do not make to the gate until some time (due to unavailability of the gate, as all the flight start landing at the same time after the weather clears), we switch to a Dispatch only when the flight is at the gate model, or when you call us that you are ready.

Flight Check: Automated Flight arrival confirmation and pickup time updates

With direct API integration of SmartCab®, Elite’s Dispatch system, with FlightView, we track all incoming flights from scheduled departure time from the originating city to touchdown time at the NYC destinations, JFK, EWR and LGA, providing ETA updates, flight diversions and flight cancellations.

With flight check we update customer pickup time regularly. If your flight is late then we dispatch the car closer to flight arrival time. This eliminates unnecessary waiting time and customers don’t have to pay extra waiting time charges.

Port Authority Airport Access Fee

Airport access

In 2019, Port Authority of NY and NJ approved the implementation of “airport access fee” surcharges on FHV and taxi trips, with the revenue earmarked to support the agency’s capital programs. Currently, this surcharge of $2.50 applies to all pickups and drops by Taxis or private hires.

John F. Kennedy International Airport - General Information

jfk

New York John F. Kennedy Airport, known by many around the world simply as “JFK”, was the world’s first large-scale international airport. The airport has been especially unique due to the unprecedented airline involvement in the design and construction of its terminals.

Also known as JFK Airport, Kennedy Airport or New York-JFK, Kennedy is the main international airport serving New York City. The airport is the busiest of the seven airports in the New York City airport system. JFK was in 2022 ranked as the 13th-busiest airport in the United States by total passenger traffic, and is the busiest international air passenger gateway into North America. Over 90 airlines operate from the airport, with nonstop or direct flights to destinations in all six inhabited continents.

JFK is centrally located in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens. After meeting your driver, go west 16 miles (26 km) to Manhattan; Average travel time 45 minutes to either Broadway (Midtown) or the world’s financial center on Wall Street (Downtown). Head east from Kennedy Airport and 90 miles (two hours) later arrive in the Hamptons, playground for the rich and famous.

The Air Train links all passenger terminals with NYC’s Subway system at Jamaica and Howard Beach Stations. At Jamaica Station, you can take the E line or the Long Island Rail Road. At Howard Beach, you can take the A line.

JFK Airport: Sadly Also A Favorite Location for Hustlers
How NOT to get conned

Beware of hustlers at the John F Kennedy Airport (JFK). It is an age-old curse by “Criminals taking advantage of just arriving passengers at JFK or other similar ports of disembarkation”. Despite regular loudspeaker announcements broadcasted by the Port Authority and signage in all terminals warning travelers, people still fall victim to these expert fraudsters. Criminals posing as legitimate taxi or limo drivers solicit arriving tourists or visitors and take them for a ride (literally). Once in their vehicle you may be overcharged, threatened or dumped at some random location. These Hustlers are waiting

hustlers
outside the customs gates or the baggage claim area. Never speak to solicitors offering you a taxi or limo. It is best to just ignore them or tell them you have a ride. As they sometimes organize into teams, beware of “fakes” with phone in hand pretending to be a busy dispatcher. Police have, in addition to dealing with constant traffic and safety issues, not been very effective in dealing with this issue. You need to watch out for yourself. Be a well-informed traveler.

At John F Kennedy Airport (JFK), the best way of getting airport transfer or transportation is to pre-book your ride with a legitimate Private Hire, limo or Black Car service. The other good options are to get a taxi at the airport-controlled taxi line or get an Uber or Lyft. The Information Counter just outside the Customs Hall can guide you to the Taxi Line or your Private Hire, Black Car or Uber-Lyft pick up area. Know your fare in advance. At JFK, Taxi Fare for Manhattan is fixed. If you are going someplace other than Manhattan, ask the Taxi Dispatcher for an estimated fare to your destination. Cost of your pre-arrange Private Hire, Black Car or limo ride should also be fixed and include all charges including tolls, taxes and credit card fees, etc. Only pay by credit card, even in a taxi. Before entering into a taxi, make certain that the driver will accept a credit card. Get a receipt. Please note down the Taxi License Number in case you forget something in the taxi. To avoid “Lost & Found” problems, using a legitimate Private Hire or Black Car Company that tracks your ride history and offers the surest way to get your property returned.

Terminals at the John F. Kennedy Airport

Currently, JFK has five active terminals and has 130 gates in total. The terminals are numbered 1–8, but only 5 are operational. Active terminals and the numbering of terminals has changed many times over the last 75 years, with changes in the travel industry air travel has increased, airlines have changed, merged and disappeared due to economic ebb and flow necessitating larger terminals with larger capacities. In time, older terminals needed replacements while new technologies and security requirements

jfk terminal map

necessitated changes. We have seen it as a never ending construction project with a better and better design. While Foreign Exchange facilities are in less demand, duty-free shops have created an atmosphere of a shopping mall. When airlines stopped serving food on the planes, restaurants and food shops took over. It is always in a flux. The 5 operational terminals are listed below.

Terminal 1: Air France & Lufthansa Terminal

Opened in 1998, under a consortium of four major carriers, Air France, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, and Lufthansa, directed the construction of Terminal1 that replaced the original International Arrivals Terminal (IAB) after 50 years of operation.

Present offerings for travelers, in addition to Air France/KLM, KAL, Lufthansa and Prime class lounges, include 16 restaurant and grab-and-go locations plus 20 retail and Duty-Free International Shops.

Taxi Fares are regulated by the TLC. Fares to Manhattan, Newark Airport and LaGuardia Airport are fixed. Fares to other destinations are determined by a licensed meter installed near the dashboard. Credit Cards are mostly accepted. Tolls, Tips, nighttime surcharge and credit card fees will be added to the fare. There may be a minimal charge for luggage. Rides to Out of Town (outside of NYC limits) destinations are double the one-way fare to compensate the driver for the return trip, as he will not find a fare coming back to the city. If you do take a taxi ride, get a receipt and note down the license number (Medallion Number) of the vehicle, which is posted in and outside the vehicle. CAR RENTAL options at JFK Airport

Car rental has become expensive these days and fewer options are available than before, COVID-19 and Uber have affected this business quite a bit.
After arriving at the airport, clearing immigration, collecting your baggage and clearing customs, you need to first call the car rental company (If you already have a reservation) to request a shuttle bus or take Air Train to the federal circle. Usually there are long waiting times to get a car. If you do not have a reservation, you may need to go to the car rental company counter and make a reservation. So, if you have been flying long distances and are tired and want to get to your hotel or other destination soon, it may not be a good choice. The process of getting to the car rental counter, pushing your luggage around and then getting your car, may sometimes take 2–3 hours.

Frequently asked questions for JFK Airport

  1. Uber and other app based companies surge prices may be a lot higher and it may cost a lot more due to flight conditions. With multiple flight arrivals at the same time creates more demand at the airport sporadically resulting in unpredictable and higher prices which may be 2-3 times the usual fare
  2. Uber drivers don’t make inside pickups so you spend extra time looking for your driver in the maze of cars lined up to pick up the passenger in the passenger pickup area. This situation gets worse in the inclement weather.

Uber cost depends upon travel distance and time. Since New York city traffic is unpredictable at times, the cost of an Uber ride would fall within a wide range.

Unlike Elite Limousine, Uber prices surge during peak hours or when the demand is more in a certain geographical area. Multiple flight arrivals at or around the same time may create unusual demand resulting in surge prices.

Savvy travelers, especially with baggage, prefer to make fixed-rate or flat-rate reservations and choose inside pickups so drivers can assist passengers with the luggage and escort them to the parking lot. Although there is an extra charge for this service but when you compare it with the convenience then it is worth it.
  1. Free 60 mins waiting time helps for baggage claim and custom delays.
